Yes! Troop 166 receives confirmation email

E-mail Print PDF
I'm excited,  got the forwarded email from our scoutmaster with our confirmation. and invited interested persons to sign up. Which  I  gladly did.  Hopefully my oldest son will be able to go, won't let him know till after finals.  It would be three trips for both of us, a record with our troop. I am willing to step aside and let other dads in the troop go if there is interest, going to Philmont is a special experience, especially with your son or daughter.  However, if no one steps up,  HERE I GO,   did I say i was excited?  Woo Hoo!                       Only maybe downside is the date of the trek  July 20 to Aug1,  which is kinda late,   I think about that time it starts to get rainy. But like they say, there is no bad trek at Philmont.

My crew went August 4 - 16 this past summer. Weather was great. Only rain were the brief afternoon types. We did have one storm roll thru the night on our fifth day; however, we call slept thru it and things dried up fairly quickly. Our Ranger did tell us his previous crew did endure a couple of days when it rained all day.

Just learned we will be going again, but date is July 1 - 13, 2012.

Stay upbeat. Remember, there is never a bad time to go to Philmont!

Thanks for the info, sorry if I didn't sound upbeat, its a blessing getting to go back to Philmont, especiially when I thought my trek in 08 was my last. The Troop went this year, but it was filled up early. I'm doubly blessed with my son agreeing to go again. Your report of your trek's weather reassures me, we certainly could live with the usual afternoon showers. I plan to do three things beside doing the usual thing with the trek crew, and staying as much hands off as I can. I plan to enjoy and savor every moment with my son, I plan to look at and enjoy as much program as we can and look at it through the eyes that I may not ever make it there again, and I plan to write another journal and blog it on this site and soon as I get back.

  • Ken K  - 2011 or 2012?

    John,
Is that a 2011 or 2012 trek? If you just got notice, I'm guessing '12. We got word this month that we were awarded a July 24th trek (2012), so our paths may cross in the wilderness!

    Mikey,
Thanks for the weather news! I too was worried that we'd be slogging along through 12 days of muddy trails. I don't mind the rain, but I like the sun a whole lot more! Of course, whatever will be will be. A rainy day in camp beats a sunny day in the office!

    Ken,
it is a 2012 trek, our trek in 08 was on July 27th and we only had one evening, and part of two days with rain. The timing of one of the rains was awful, just had reached the top of Baldy, was there 15 minutes and had to get off. thunderstorm with lightning was fast approching and didn't want to risk the danger of a lightning stike. Our paths may indeed cross, if you see troop 166, out of poplar bluff, mo
gives us a yell. Glad you got a trek. I am hoping to be able to post to my facebook page at every opportunity with pictures and descriptions of what is happening on the trail. Last time I was there I didn't have a facebook page, didn't know what it was and wouldn't have thought of it anyway. Think the parents of the crew may like this.

  • Ken K  - Small world!

    John,

It is indeed a small world... We're just a "quick" jump north of you, 20 miles east of St. Louis!

When you start working out travel plans, I'd love to hear what you come up with... Our last Philmont contingent (four years ago, before my son was in the troop) took Amtrak out of St. Louis. I hear that worked well, but since "Day 1" is a Tuesday, I'd like to get into Albuquerque or Santa Fe a couple days early and take in some educational tourism (and give us a couple more days catch our breath).

    Thanks again!

    Ken,
It is indeed a small world. I will let you know what our travel plans are as soon as I know. The troop went by amtrak last summer, and would think thats how we will be going. Went with the St. Louis contingent in 2008 by three rivers travel bus, but I think they have gone out of business. We had two layover days in 06 and went one day to Taos, the other to Santa Fe, Liked Taos much better, lots of things to see and do. best I can tell, they even have white water rafting. on the way to Taos, you go by the angel fire Ski resort, the one you can see from the top of Baldy, pretty neat. I will say two days to acclimate would come in handy. I wasn't positive my son and I were in the 2012 trek for sure, but got the confirmation email from the scoutmaster today and we were on the top of the list. Unbelievably, only seven people have committed, but surely more will as time passes.

Just got a second email, were bumped to the waiting list, but in two years, anything can happen :(
but not really expecting to be able to go now

  • FatBoy  - Mixed feelings.

    John,

That's a bit of a downer, but I bet there's an upside somewhere. I'm guessing they'd only bump you for families that haven't had a chance to visit Philmont. Still, I'm sure that's not much consolation.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

    Ken,
Thanks for the finger crossing. We were indeed bumped for people that hadn't been before, and that is as it should be. I wouldn't want to cause someone not to get to go. For me, I would have liked to know sooner that there was a possibility of not going, but I don't blame the scoutmaster. And there is still the chance.........

  • hunts to late

John I hope you do go. You sound pretty excited and I am too. I just booked a room for three nights at the St. James on the Fourth of July. I have three boys out there working so maybe you'll see them too! It's pretty cool to have gone out there when I was 16 and now I know a ranger, a ranger trainer and the youngest who will be working at Head of Dean. They worked there last summer and my wife and I drove out and hung out a few days and we're planning it again...lots of fun trout fishing, hiking etc. Can't wait...good luck!

    hunts to late,

Thanks for the well wishes. My son and I indeed get to go. Two scouts dropped out and opened up the way for us to go. Must be fantastic to have three sons working there. My son applied last year, but waited too late to send the application in, and didn't get hired. Too bad, I think he would have loved working there. Wound up getting a nice summer job in our town. Our trek is not until 2012, but if they still are working there, let me know, and I'll try to look them up. Both treks I've been on have gone through the Head of Dean, great Place! Hope you have a great time at the St. James.

From the top of the mountain, to the bottom of the valley, I have had both emotions on this preparation for our 2012 trek. First we were in, then we got bumped off, then readded to the list. Bought everything we needed to go. Then my son herniated a disc is his lower back. No big deal, with new micro surgery, he would be back to pretty much everything in three weeks ,full recovery in six weeks. unfortunatly, insurance has made him jump though hoops, with therapy, pain injections etc. which have done nothing except kill time. Scheduled for sugery finally, and Doctor cancelled it the day before due to concerns about his blood sugar levels. We had reservations about that surgeon anyway. Saw a new surgeon, and he is being cautious, and ordering new tests. I had given a Sept. 1 dedline to have something done, so to give the troop time to find our replacements, we withdrew. I really think he will get the surgery at some point. I noticed last year a lot of offers of openings in crews, more than I ever have. So that's what we are shooting for, for my son to get well, and hook up with a crew with two openings. :(

This has been one roller coaster ride! After giving up on going this year, I received an email from the scoutmaster offering our two positions back, as a father and son had dropped out. I find out the middle of next week if everthing gets worked out, so Woo Hoo, here we go again :)
It would be extra special to get to go one last time, with my son , will try to make the most of every minute.
